Diego Costa close to Chelsea exit as proposed Atletico Madrid switch nears completion

Posted: 12 September 2017 Time: 12:21

Diego Costa is set to agree a return to Atletic Madrid this week after Chelsea accepted a £54m bid for the wantaway striker.

The Spain international has not played for the Blues this season since falling out of favour with manager Antonio Conte and is even refusing to train with the reserves as he seeks to secure a move away from Stamford Bridge.

And while the transfer window may have slammed shut at the end of August, Chelsea are still open to striking a deal which would allow the Brazilian-born forward to leave in January.

That proposed switch now appears to be close to completion, with the final paperwork expected to be pushed through this week.

Chelsea will, meanwhile, continue without the services of their top scorer last season when they take on Qarabag in the opening round of UEFA Champions League group-stage fixtures this evening [20h45 kick off].
