Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has to make forced changes at the back

Posted: 12 September 2017 Time: 08:00

A makeshift Kaizer Chiefs defense will be put to the test against the in-form Cape Town City in the Mother City on Wednesday.

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela is forced to make changes to almost his entire back four, due to the injuries suffered by Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Tsepo Masilela, as well as the suspension of struggling Mulomowandau Mathoho.

Mphahlele has been ruled out of action for four months with a knee injury he sustained while on international duty with Bafana Bafana and Masilela will be on the sidelines for three months with an ankle problem.

Mphahlele and Masilela are key components in the Amakhosi backline and will be missed in the coming months.

Kgotso Moleko, who has never been able to cement his place in the starting line-up, is available to play in Mphahlele’s place while former Maritzburg United man Philani Zulu looks set to start at left back.

Mathoho got himself sent off in the 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United and they’ll have to do without him in the centre of defense. New signing Teenage Hadebe is still not available and is only expected to start training in about eight weeks.

This leaves Daniel Cardoso and Lorenzo Gordinho as Komphela’s choices in central defense. These two players will have to keep a close eye on City’s dangerous attack, made up of the hard running Lehlohonolo Majoro, Ayanda Patosi and Sibusiso Masina.

What should concern Komphela even more is how Gordinho has struggled for form this season, recently getting left out of the Bafana.

Amakhosi, who are still searching for their first win this season, could be in for a long 90 minutes at the Cape Town Stadium (19h30). Can they keep their first clean sheet of the season? Only time will tell.
