Kaizer Chiefs will be without defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele for four months, the club revealed on their website on Monday.
According to Amakhosi, the former Mamelodi Sundowns captain returned from national team duty with a knee injury.
He will undergo surgery on Monday, so Chiefs will probably have Kgotso Moleko playing at right back when they face Cape Town City in the Mother City on Wednesday.
Chiefs are also expected to be without veteran left back Tsepo Masilela, who is expected back for rehabilitation in three months. The former Bafana Bafana left back underwent surgery to remedy his ankle ligament problem. He sustained the injury in the 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United a couple of weeks ago.
Another left back, Sibusiso Khumalo, has a knee problem sustained during training. He will be sidelined for three weeks.
Good news for Amakhosi supporters is that Itumeleng Khune is back after he had a chest infection. He will travel with the team to face City.
Striker Ryan Moon has recovered from a knee injury and will return to training this week.
