Percy Tau came off the bench to net a brace as Mamelodi Sundowns recorded a 2-1 win over Free State Stars at Goble Park.
Sundowns enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages, but it was Stars who had the first chance as Relebogile Mokhuoane fired wide of the upright with only Razak Brimah to beat in the ninth minute.
Pitso Mosimane's charges had to wait until the 21st minute for their first meaningful chance as Leonardo Castro latched onto a long ball before hitting the upright from close range.
The visitors were in control for most of the first stanza, but they were forced into a change in the 28th minute when Anthony Laffor came off with an injury and was replaced by Tau.
Luc Eymael's charges started seeing a bit more of the ball in the final 10 minutes of the half, but they were unable to threaten Razak Brimah's goal.
However, Sundowns opened the scoring just before the halftime break when Tau curled a fine free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards out.
After a quiet start to the half, Tau made it 2-0 to the Brazilians in the 59th minute with a moment of brilliance as he unleashed a wonderful strike that sailed into the top right corner, following a run made from just over the half-way line.
After 71 minutes Eymael's men picked up their game, frequently threatening on set-pieces, as they were looking to get back into the match.
Lucky Mohomi was introduced into the match in the 81st minute with Mosimane giving Oupa Manyisa a rest.
Stars were still camping in Sundowns' half in the closing five minutes but Mosimane's charges remained disciplined.
However, Nhlanhla Vilakazi pulled a goal back in the third minute of stoppage time with a bullet header inside the box, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Sundowns held on for the win.
