The Monday Column: Worrying times for Bidvest Wits

Posted: 11 September 2017 Time: 13:00

Bidvest Wits looks a side in distress as they continue their poor form as defending double champions in the 2017/18 season.

The Clever Boys are yet to register a victory in regulation time in their five games thus far, making it their worst ever start to a season since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in 1996/97.

Wits started off the campaign with a 2-2 MTN8 quarterfinal draw at home to Golden Arrows, but managed to advance via a dramatic penalty shootout.

Gavin Hunt’s side has since suffered three defeats to Cape Town City, twice in their two-legged cup semi-final and once in the league, while also drawing 2-2 away to hoodoo opponents Free State Stars.

At home, where Bidvest Stadium proved a fortress for the champions in 2016/17, Wits have already lost two games – the same amount they lost at home all of last season.

Contributing to their poor form could be the hangover of winning their maiden topflight title last season after a 96-year wait, with 37-year-old gloveman Moeneeb Josephs already having lambasted the players’ hunger and fighting spirit following their MTN8 exit on Sunday.

Another factor could be the inconsistent line-ups that has seen at least one new face in each of their five outings thus far.

This is due to various factors, including suspensions and injuries, with the absence of Buhle Mkhwanazi proving the biggest obstacle for Hunt at this stage.

Wits have yet to keep a clean sheet and have already conceded eight goals, having conceded 22 times in all 30 league games last term.

With tests against Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs awaiting this week, the Braamfontein-based side will need a drastically improved performance to gain impetus in this season’s championship chase.
