Thabiso Kutumela netted a brace to inspire Orlando Pirates to victory in their opening MultiChoice Diski Challenge clash, while champions Mamelodi Sundowns were well beaten by Bloemfontein Celtic.

Sundowns began the defence of their title with a 3-0 loss to Celtic on Saturday morning.

Celtic broke the deadlock after 30 minutes courtesy of a strike from Thabo Mile, after a fine start to the encounter.

Kabelo Dlamini doubled Celtic's lead shortly after the halftime break, before Mile rounded off the scoring with his second of the game.

In the final game of the day, Pirates got their season underway with a 2-1 win over AmaZulu.

The Buccanneers went ahead through Kutumela's finish from range after seven minutes.

Kutumela then bagged his second goal shortly after the halftime break after turning home Freddie Hhlalele's cross.

AmaZulu pulled a goal in the 70th minute courtesy of a fine header from Sandile Khumalo, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Pirates held on for the win.
