Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Surprise Moriri is part of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge technical team

Posted: 9 September 2017 Time: 08:00

Former midfielder Surprise Moriri will be on the bench when MultiChoice Diski Challenge champions Mamelodi Sundowns begin the defense of their title with a clash against Bloemfontein Celtic today.

Moriri, who left Sundowns after 12 years to join Highlands Park at the beginning of last season, called time on his playing career when the curtains closed on the last campaign and immediately went into coaching.

By the time he retired, Moriri had already started working on his coaching qualifications and he has acquired a CAF B License. He will be working as an assistant to head coach David Notoane.

Moriri has always wanted to be a coach and he has a passion for youth development, which will only help Sundowns unearth more talent going forward.

"So far it has been a good response [from the players] and you can see it in their eyes that when we are training. And whenever you give them advice it feels like this is something they were waiting to hear," Moriri says.

"Being there with the boys, looking up to me … that is why I chose to equip myself so when I talk to them I talk sense and talk football.

"What’s close to my heart is to give back and make sure that we produce stars and make sure that we find raw talent and give them platforms to become better players."

Sundowns will play Celtic at Clermont's Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban today. Kick-off is at 10h00.
