Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs reaches 20-year milestone

Posted: 7 September 2017 Time: 18:30

Moeneeb Josephs’ legendary standing in domestic football continues to soar as he today become the first ever footballer to top up 20 years in PSL football.

Josephs was a 17-year-old kid on the afternoon of September 7, 1997 when he was thrown into the fray by Cape Town Spurs coach Sergio dos Santos away at African Wanderers ahead of Wayne Roberts – whose lifestyle was always a concern despite his talent.

The energetic new boy didn’t disappoint on his debut between the posts, keeping a clean sheet as The Eagles ran out 2-0 winners courtesy of strikes either side of the break by Moomba N’Gandu and Reggie Mentoor.

Four of Josephs’ teammates at Bidvest Wits today - Phakamani Mahlambi, Sanele Tshabalala, Reeve Frosler and Kobamelo Kodisang - were all not born on the day Josephs made his PSL debut.

During that 1997-98 season ‘Slim Kat’ went to make nine starts in all competitions, standing as second choice to Roberts for most of the campaign.

Two decades later Josephs is still standing in the PSL and is the man that is still guarding the posts at Bidvest Wits.

All of his teammates from his first season in the PSL have since long retired. They include: David Modise, Epangala Lokose, Dougie Williams, Dennis Vukubi, Edzai Kasinauyo (late), Michael Jacobs, Ian Gorowa, Craig Rosslee, Shaun Bartlett, N’Gandu, Vusi Laher, Paulo das Neves, Mentoor and former KICK OFF employee Trevor Mosehathebe.

Through his time in the PSL the 37-year-old has won all trophies offered on the domestic scene and has been capped at Under-17 and U-20 level, and has 23 Bafana Bafana caps.

Through his career he has had two spells with Wits and played for Spurs, Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates.
