Former Bafana, SuperSport and Racing Santander defender Nasief Morris confirms retirement

Former Bafana Bafana defender Nasief Morris has confirmed his retirement following a professional playing career that stretched 20 years.

Morris spent the past three years with First Division club Milano United, having also played for Santos and SuperSport United since returning to South Africa after a decade in Europe.

Abroad he played in Greece (Aris Saloniki and Panathinaikos), Spain (Recreativo de Huelva and Racing Santander) and Cyprus (Apollo Limassol), and went as far as featuring in the UEFA Champions League in his prime.

“I have officially retired now,” he tells KickOff.com.

“I mean Milano and FC Cape Town were both sold, Santos relegated and that meant my options became even thinner since I didn’t want to leave Cape Town because of family reasons. I now have triplets with my wife and so there was no chance of leaving them alone here in Cape Town.

“The way forward now… I just joined Football For All which is an organisation dealing with development matters and we go around conducting clinics at schools here in Cape Town. I also want to see if I can get an academy started in the area where I grew up here in Cape Town and I am trying to get funding for that project.

“I have also been doing the coaching courses because the fact that I played football all over the world is no licence to think you can become a good coach. It is for that reason that I am equipping myself through these coaching courses. In my time as a junior player I never really went through proper training under trained coaches, I was just lucky to get a break,” says Morris.

The 36-year-old retires with 37 caps for Bafana Bafana.
