Varsity Football champions Tshwane University of Technology beat University of the Western Cape 4-2 in Round 5 action at TUT Stadium last night.
In honour of cancer month, the teams were escorted onto the pitch by children wearing pink caps and ribbons, displaying the universities' empathy for cancer sufferers and raising awareness for the cause.
The early stages of the match featured a dominant home side, playing possession football and making themselves comfortable in the opposition's half. This led to an 11th minute goal from captain Themba Ndlovu, but UWC were quick to respond with a goal from Josh Silent just four minutes later.
It was then a back-and-forth exchange, with the next goal coming in the 18th minute from Lebogang Phatlane and a distant effort from UWC’s Chad Smith hitting the back of the net moments later.
The second half kicked off with the scores level and both teams adjusting their style of play, showing a more defensive setup. The tie was ignited again when TUT skipper Ndlovu got his second goal of the game by curling in a free-kick past UWC keeper Ryan Ramandh.
Ndlovu shone once more when he completed his hat-trick with a powerful long-range strike, making the final score 4-2. His efforts earned him the Man of the Match award and also leaves him as the tournament's top scorer with six goals.
TUT remain at the top of the log with 13 points, while the boys from Bellville trail by four.
