Gavin Hunt says Bidvest Wits' lack of ruthless streak cost them in the MTN8 loss to Cape Town City

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes his side have only themselves to blame after succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Cape Town City in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg on Sunday.

Ayanda Patosi’s solitary strike two minutes before half-time proved the difference at Cape Town Stadium to leave the defending champions with it all to do heading into the return fixture next month.

The result marked a repeat of the two sides’ Absa Premiership opener at Bidvest Stadium earlier this month where City won by the same scoreline, and Hunt feels a lack of attacking intent cost them in both encounters.

“Over the last two games [against Cape Town City], if we scored half our chances against them we would have won by a country mile; both games,” he told SuperSport TV.

“The goalkeeper [City’s Shu-Aib Walters] has won two man of the matches in the last two games,” said the coach in reference to his side’s numerous shots on target.

“They [City] didn’t try and play, they just play out on the counter and sat in, and all credit to them, they won the game and we’ve got to try break it down and be better than that.”

Hunt also rued the referee’s failure to award his side a penalty in the opening 45 minutes, saying: “We should have had a penalty in the first-half, a blatant penalty and didn’t get it, but that’s how football works.

“We’re positive and it’s not over yet, that’s for sure. As I said, the last two games we conceded two set-pieces from them. I mean real poor marking in certain areas and certain situations.”
