Martizburg United’s Fadlu Davids keeping level headed after MTN8 first leg draw at SuperSport United

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids insists “it’s only half-time” following his side’s 1-1 away draw in their MTN8 first-leg semi-final against SuperSport United.

Lebohang Maboe cancelled out Thuso Phala’s opener to give the Team of Choice a crucial away goalat Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night, handing his side a slight advantage ahead of next month’s return leg.

“We wanted to score an away goal, and luckily we got it in the end,” coach Davids told SuperSportTV. “But it’s half-time … normally you tell your players at half-time, if you leading 2-0, to be careful, but we are not leading 2-0 – it’s 1-1, and we’ve still got another game to play, so we have to be focused and prepare for the next game.”

Davids was quick to note the quality his rivals possess, and the work new coach Eric Tinkler has done in the short space of time he has been at the club.

“SuperSport are a fantastic side,” he said. “You can see the work the coach has been doing, and the fantastic elements that have been coming through. You have to be on guard against SuperSport all the time as they can hit you at any moment and get a goal out of nothing.”

Davids hope his side will be strengthened even further before the close of the current transfer window, and is relishing the upcoming Fifa international break as his side seek a deserved rest.

“It’s the final few days of the window, hopefully we can get one or two players in, and then refresh and switch off – two days off perhaps, after three games in seven days,” he said. “So it’s time for the players to press the reset button and start preparing for the second leg.”

The second leg at Harry Gwala Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, 9 September.
