Young Sundowns shine at Bayhill

There was plenty of thrills and spills as teams competing in the Under-19 Metropolitan Cup scored almost 30 goals on Friday at Erica Park with Mamelodi Sundowns destroying Ajax Aldos 6-0, Bidvest Wits thrashing Rygersdal 5-1 and Bay United beating Ajax Cape Town in a five-goal evening thriller.

While Dan Malesela was not too happy with the young Brazilians’ opening 2-0 win, blaming his side for not scoring more goals, there was certainly a smile on his face as his charges marched into the knock-our stages with a game to spare.   Although Wits bounced back from an embarrassing 1-0 defeat to Maties, they have a tough encounter today against undefeated log leaders Baltic Rangers.   Moreover, holders Ajax Cape Town after their 3-2 loss must pick up maximum points against high-flying Western Province United to have any chance of qualifying for theLast 16.   Ace Mnini’s Moroka Swallows are also through to Sunday’s exciting knockout stage following a much better performance against Steve Haupt’s Southdowns FC.   The Birds won 3-0, however, Mich D’Avray’s Bloemfontein Celtic who played out a goalless draw with Bright Stars, the 2007 champions, face the prospect of going home early if they again fail to score against newcomers, Edgemead-Goodwood.   Another club with an uphill battle is Platinum Stars, who picked up their first win on Friday, beating School of Excellence 2-0, but they must overpower Milano United to get through.   In other results, City Lovers beat England’s South Nottingham College 3-1 to qualify; Germany’s Armenia Bielefeld defeated Santos 2-0, while there were no goals between hosts, Bayhill United and Belhar Spurs.
