SAFA technical director Neil Tovey hails Sphephelo Sithole's move to Sporting CP

South African Football Association technical director Neil Tovey says Sphephelo Sithole’s move to Portuguese side Sporting CP is a huge boon for local football.

The former Amajimbos midfielder, who was part of the Under-17 national team that participated at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile in 2015, put pen to paper with Sporting this week.

Sithole, a KwaZulu-Natal Academy graduate, was first spotted by the Portuguese outfit at the Durban U19 tournament, where Thabo Cele was also able to showcase his talents before earning a move to the Primeira Liga with Benfica.

“This is really great news for South African football. Such achievements are not to be taken lightly as this will in the near future benefit South African football,” Tovey said on the official Safa website.

“We wish Sphephelo the best of luck in Portugal and hope to see more young players secure contracts in Europe.”
