Baroka and Bucs end even

Orlando Pirates and Baroka FC had to content themselves with a point apiece after their Absa Premiership clash ended 1-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.

Thabo Qalinge opened the scoring in the first-half but his effort was cancelled out in the second by Abdi Banda's first goal in South African football.

In an opening period relatively devoid of chances Qalinge saw his shot from a fair distance out sail over the crossbar.

Midway through the first stanza Innocent Maela stood up a cross at the back post but Thamsanqa Gabuza couldn't get enough behind his header as it looped tamely away from goal.

New Baroka signing Talent Chawapihwa took it upon himself to try and engineer something inside the final 10 minutes of the half but was crowded out after squirming his way into the box.

At the other end Qalinge tried to find the opener but his awkward shot on the half-volley was cleared as far as Luvoyo Memela, who blasted over.

The deadlock was eventually broken as Mpho Makola clipped a ball into the area and Qalinge arrived to direct his header into the far corner.

At the other end Wayne Sandilands kept the newly acquired lead intact with an excellent save to keep out Gift Motupa's diving header.

Crosses were proving profitable for the visitors and Gabuza steered his header just over the bar in first-half stoppage time.

Within minutes of kicking off the second-half Kgoloko Thobejane introduced new signing Siphelele Ntshangase and his introduction provided an extra spark up front for Baroka.

Pirates still had their fair share of chances despite defending their lead and Gabuza fired straight at Virgil Vries whilst Thabo Rakhale saw his shot deflected over the crossbar.

With the Buccaneers keeping it tight at the back Punch Masenamela let fly from quite a way out but Sandilands got behind the shot well.

Baroka remained on top and Ntshangase's brilliant reverse ball located Sipho Moeti in the box and forced Ntsikelelo Nyauza to make a crucial intervention.

From the resultant corner, the hosts found a leveller as Tanzanian defender Banda powered his header past a despairing Sandilands from an acute angle.
