Tsepo Masilela concedes Kaizer Chiefs must do better

Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has admitted they haven’t had an ideal start to the season but insists the belief remains intact as they have a squad that can compete for the three remaining trophies.

Chiefs are already out the MTN8 after being booted out by SuperSport United and didn’t look convincing as they kicked off their Premiership campaign with a draw at Bloemfontein Celtic.

“It is not an ideal start but then it is only two games and we have played a draw away. Maybe it is bad because we didn’t win the cup game to qualify for the semi-finals,” says Masilela.

“To be out of the MTN8 is a big loss for us because we obviously wanted to progress considering that last season we also went out in the first game when we lost in Cape Town. So we wanted to go a step further because for two seasons now we haven’t won so we wouldn’t blame the fans if they were to be worried. All that we are saying is that it is only two games and there is a lot that is going to happen. We don’t know who is going to win what and when but there is still a lot that is going to happen because it is a long season,” he reasons.

Yet the fact remains that Amakhosi haven’t won any silverware in the last two years and they will get a constant reminder about that.

“Besides being reminded we know as players what we have done and what we haven’t done and what we want to do. So it is not a question of getting reminded and getting worried. We know how the past two seasons went and we are trying our best to win trophies for the fans, for the team and for us because it is good for everyone when you win trophies.

“It is a new start and a new season. It is not like we are at the end of the season, it is still fresh and there are still three more trophies to play for so that is what keeps us going and keeps us motivated. We have the belief that we can win one or two so why not believe. If the belief is there we keep going and try to motivate the guys and also we got a couple of youngsters and the new players. So it is all about trying to make them understand the culture of Kaizer Chiefs and the fact that the expectations are high. We have to meet the expectations of the fans and we try our upmost best to meet the expectations,” says Masilela.

While there have been questions about the quality of the Chiefs squad the experienced wingback thinks otherwise.

“We have a good squad. The games that we have played, I think we lack  consistency because we would play one game very well and the next okay. So we just have to get the consistency. We do have the squad to run the race and go all the way,” he adds.

Chiefs host SuperSport United on Wednesday night in their next match at FNB Stadium (19h30).
