National First Division - Matchday 1 wrap and results

Posted: 20 August 2017 Time: 20:40

Witbank Spurs were the only side to score more than one goal on the opening weekend of the National First Division season, leaving them as the early pace setters in South Africa’s second tier.

The NFD proved largely fruitless in terms of goals scored on Matchday 1, with Spurs’ 2-1 victory over Super Eagles proving the biggest scoreline over Saturday and Sunday.

However, the side are joined at the summit by Black Leopards, Cape Town All Stars and Highlands Park, who also got the three points as all three won their matches 1-0.

Three 1-1 draws provided the rest of the weekend’s action, with newly-formed Richards Bay marking their first NFD outing with a 1-1 draw at home against Real Kings, while fellow debutants Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila slumped to a 1-0 loss against Cape Town All Stars.

The opening round of NFD fixtures will conclude on Monday when city rivals Ubuntu Cape Town FC host Stellenbosch FC.
