Orlando Pirates set to name defender Abbubaker Mobara as captain for the 2017/18 season

KickOff.com has learnt that defender Abbubaker Mobara has emerged as the favorite to take over as the new Orlando Pirates captain.

The Buccaneers are due to announce a new skipper this weekend following the departure of Oupa Manyisa to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic has already revealed the Soweto giants will announce the new captain at least 24 hours before their league game against Chippa United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi, who led the side to their historic double-treble in 2012, has put his weight behind the Cape Town-born defender to wear the armband this coming season, words that have humbled the Bafana Bafana defender.

"Coming from a legend as big as him [Lucky Lekgwathi] is something to think of myself as a footballer,” said Mobara.

"As someone who has been at Pirates for years, he knows quite more than I know. If he could see I can be a leader then maybe I should and make a change to become a leader.

"It’s not something difficult to accept because it’s been a year being here and coming to get an armband is a privilege.

“Personally, at this age, I don't think I’m ready but if it is that they [Pirates] appoint me as captain, I will take the opportunity to help contribute with the armband,” he added.
