Maritzburg United midfielder Denis Weidlich believes Sunday’s MTN8 quarter-final victory over Mamelodi Sundowns shows the team have learned from their lessons in the past.
Evans Rusike proved the hero for the Team of Choice as they carved out a 1-0 win over the African champions at Lucas Moripe Stadium to progress to the semi-finals, where Maritzburg will square off against another Tshwane side in SuperSport United.
Speaking after the game, Weidlich dedicated his man-of-the-match award to his team-mates, while also lauding the impact of head coach Fadlu Davids in the build-up to the new PSL season.
“This [the individual match award] goes to the whole team, we worked so hard,” he told SuperSport TV.
“We had a very hard pre-season, we knew what would come and we did very well last time against Sundowns, at the end [of the game] we did some mistakes but we learned from it, you can see.
“For this season we set so many targets so for us, it’s perfect, brilliant, to qualify for the next round.”
He continued: “The coach [Fadlu Davids] taught us very well. We don’t have a star [player], the who team is a star so we all push into one direction.
"If we fail, we all fail. If we win, we all win, so I think that keeps us so strong, with the supporters behind our backs and with the belief that we can achieve, even though we are a ‘small’ team.”
