SuperSport United defender Grant Kekana says he has a new lease on life and on football, and credits that fact to his first-born child.
Michael Boxall’s involvement with New Zealand in the Fifa Confederations Cup in June opened the door for Kekana at SuperSport and he grabbed the chance with both hands, having barely put a foot wrong since coming into the first-team.
The same was true on Saturday as he helped Matsatsantsa carve out a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-finals at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Kekana, who was previously loaned out by SuperSport to University of Pretoria - and who was part of the side that won the first Multichoice Diski Challenge in 2014/15 - says he draws plenty inspiration from his new born baby.
“I think I’ve found a new lease of life; I’ve just had my first born and that is the motivation I'm getting every time I'm on the pitch,” Kekana tells KickOff.com.
"Now it’s not about me anymore, it’s about my family. I just started my family now so every time I'm on the field, I need to represent them.
“It is also just the confidence I'm getting from everyone in the team whenever I'm given the chance, everyone supports me. I think that is something I take into perspective every time I go onto the field and I think that is driving me to do more every time I get to put on the jersey.”
Looking back over this weekend’s Chiefs scalp, Kekana says: “It was a tough game but I'm glad that we were resilient as a group; it’s a cup match and the result is what counts at the end of the day. We’re just happy that at the end of the day we’re through to the semis.”
Kekana also lauded the seamless transition of new head coach Eric Tinkler into the Tshwane club, saying: “I think nothing has changed since coach Eric Tinkler took over and he's also an attacking coach and obviously he just has his way of attacking. But attacking is attacking at the end of the day.
“The good thing is that we [the players] have been together, I think two seasons now, so we've come to know each other.
“We are just happy that he's giving us the motivation to express whenever we go forward.”
