Devon Saal: Maritzburg United will take it to Mamelodi Sundowns in MTN8 quarter-finals

Maritzburg United winger Devon Saal says they won’t be intimidated by African champions Mamelodi Sundowns when they lock horns in the MTN8 quarter-finals today.

Maritzburg will be making only their second appearance in the competition when the action kicks off at 15h00 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“It will be an exciting affair for us as players and a club,” Saal told “We’ll be attack-minded and won’t stand back or creep in our shell just because its Sundowns.

“It’s important we strike the balance between when to go and when to close as we cannot afford to give them lots of space. They will punish you with the quality they have.

“But we’re not focused on them. We’ll approach this game the same as any other – we will not be intimidated by them.”

A new era appears to beckoning for the Team of Choice who are lead by a promising and ambitious young coach in Fadlu Davids.

Saal, who is in his second season back in the PSL, says the pre-season under Davids has been competitive and fruitful.

“The one advantage of our young coach is that he understands the younger players. The coach makes it really easy to fit in and understand what he wants us to do.

“We have a coach that is hungry for success and that will rub off on us as players. It’s important we do the basics right and perfect it, you know. On a personal note I feel I can add more value in the attacking half.

“I want to contribute with more goals and assists as I still would like to play for the national team but I’m aware that I have to work hard. I feel the coach can bring the best out of me,” Saal concluded.
