Bidvest Wits defender Sifiso Hlanti confident of successfully defending MTN8 crown

Bidvest Wits defender Sifiso Hlanti feels the club's strength in depth stands them in good stead to successfully defend the MTN8 trophy.

Gavin Hunt's side will face Golden Arrows in the quarter finals at Bidvest Stadium on Friday, marking the start of the 2017/18 Premier Soccer League season.

Wits have been one of the more active teams in the transfer market and have completed the signings of Daylan Classen and former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar, who returned to South Africa after 16 years abroad.

And, former AmaZulu defender Hlanti says it within Wits to defend their trophy and believes they can do so with the players they have added.

“I think everyone is ready for the game on Friday because what we have been doing during the pre-season, everyone is willing to add value and in a good space of mind,” Hlanti tells KickOff.com.

“It won't be easy since we won the league and MTN8 last season. I think teams will be aware of us now but the biggest concern is Wits.

“To counter that, what is so important is to take it one game at the time because at the end of the day we can't put ourselves under pressure, that is unnecessary.”

Orlando Pirates are the last club to defend the MTN8 trophy, having done so between 2010 and 2012 during their double-treble success

“It’s all about hard work because at the end of the day I believe in the players that we have here in the team, individuals who know what we want,” he says.

“If we can put our minds together we can come up with something positive.

“But for that to happened, it'll depend on how we work and this game is very important for us against Arrows.

“Even in the players who have joined us, they'll need to be committed to repeat what we did last season for them to form part of the winning team.”
