McCarthy relying on Major goals

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has his hopes pinned on striker Lehlohonolo Majoro to be amongst the goals this season, labelling the striker as his “go-to guy”.
‘Major’, as the forward is affectionately known, blew hot and cold last season after netting eight goals in 29 appearances for the Citizens, while also struggling to shrug off injuries and excess weight.
McCarthy told reporters ahead of their MTN8 opener against Polokwane City on Saturday that the hosts can hugely benefit from the former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker, who has looked much leaner and sharper ahead of his second season in the Mother City.
“Major is experienced and obviously we’ve been trying to work Major as hard as possible to get him in the best possible shape that we can,” said McCarthy.
“Then you’ve got a guy who you can look to get between 15 and 20 goals for you, but if you’re able to get his fitness in peak, get him sharp in front of goal, he knows where the goal is and obviously he’s an important member in the squad so obviously he’s going to be my go-to guy.”
Apart from Majoro’s predatory instincts, City still remain a potent force with so many forward options and McCarthy expects his attack-minded cavalry to chip in with their fair share of goals this season.
“We’ve also got Lebo [Manyama] there who’s got plenty of goals in him as an attacking midfielder. So, between Major, Lebo and getting Ayanda Patosi back into the level where he should be, then you’ve got another who can chip in with a good couple of goals.
“If they can just continue to tip the goal telly in matches and then you don’t need to rely on a 20 to 15 goal-scoring striker, you have to try and chip in.
“I’m looking at between five and 10 [goals] coming from the wide guys like Lyle Lakay, [Sibusiso] Masina, so yeah, Letsie Koapeng. I think we’re okay as we’ve got a lot of guys that have goals in them,” the former Champions League winner with Porto concluded.
