With Mario Booysen subject to interest from Orlando Pirates, SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews gives credibility to the stories linking the defender with a move to Mayfair and explains why they abandoned their pursuit.
KickOff.com yesterday revealed that the Buccaneers were in contact with Mamelodi Sundowns, Booysen's parent club, over a possible move.
The 28-year-old is back at Chloorkop but has been given no assurances over his future and would appear to be quite low in the pecking order at Sundowns considering the options they have at centre-half.
Having spent last season on loan at SuperSport United a permanent move appeared to be on the cards but speaking in an interview with KickOff.com, Matthews explained that the Booysen's price tag was too hefty.
“From our discussions with Sundowns we feel the values and asking prize was unrealistic so we had no choice but walk away from that deal," Matthews tells this website.
“We love Mario, he is a former player of ours. We like him a lot but from what we hear he could be headed to Orlando Pirates."
Booysen is currently in Bafana Bafana camp as they prepare for the CHAN qualifier against Zambia in East London this coming weekend.
