University of Pretoria coach Shaun Bartlett pins hopes on ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder Clifford Ngobeni

University of Pretoria coach Shaun Bartlett will be banking on the experience of former Orlando Pirates midfielder Clifford Ngobeni in the coming season, as he makes another attempt to win promotion.

Ngobeni, who once outclassed Mamelodi Sundowns legend Godfrey Sapula in the 2006 Absa Cup final while in the colours of Ajax Cape Town, never quite got to reaching his potential and one can only imagine how much of a star he would have been had things gone his way.

At Ajax, Ngobeni was tipped for big things after coming from their youth ranks to work with coach Muhsin Ertugral – someone who believes in young players. But a move to Pirates in 2010 did not work out and he has since struggled to revive his career.

There’s no doubt the midfielder has got the talent and Tuks will give him an opportunity to show his worth in their bid for promotion.

Ngobeni was at Alexandra Black Aces in the ABC Motsepe League last season with the likes of Rudolf Bester, Tsietsi Mahoa and former national under-20 player Philani Khwela.

“I never put too much emphasis on an individual player. But I think a player that will add a bit more value with his knowledge of the game is Clifford Ngobeni. He used to be with [Orlando] Pirates and Ajax Cape Town, and he’s now with us,” Bartlett tells KickOff.com.

“He’s one key player that, I think, can help us a lot in our quest for promotion.”

Bartlett and Ngobeni have similar goals for the next season – one being a coach leading his team to promotion and the other a player looking to finish his career on a high. At age 30, Ngobeni will be looking to achieve as many things as possible and he can start by inspiring Tuks to automatic promotion.
