Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi believes Abbubaker Mobara would be a good choice for captain

Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi believes Abbubaker Mobara would be the perfect person to replace Oupa Manyisa as Bucs captain in the coming season.

Lekgwathi gave an example of how Mbulelo Mabizela, in his early 20s, led the Buccaneers to the PSL title in 2002/2003 under former coach Roy Barreto. He says Mabizela learnt while he was on the job and Mobara, who is 23, can do the same.

Mobara was one of the few Pirates players who performed well last season and has shown that he has a desire to do well for the team.

Quite a few of Pirates’ supporters also feel Mobara would make a good captain, having expressed their views on the different social media platforms.

“I would recommend Mobara as captain. I remember in 2002, when I arrived at Pirates, 'Old John' [Mabizela] took over as captain. He was 23 when he led Pirates to the league title and he was the youngest captain at Pirates to win the title,” Lekgwathi tells

“So I think it’s time to give a young player a chance to captain a big team like Pirates. Mobara leads by example, on and off the pitch. I never hear negative stories about him. I see potential in him and as a captain you always learn. I think he can be a great leader.”

Lekgwathi says he would always be available to give Mobara advice.

“I can give myself time and guide and tell him my experience of captaining Pirates. I also learnt from other players who captained Pirates. One of them was 'Tso' [Vilakazi]. Tso was captain and we used to call Edward Motale for guidance. There are too many others that we called, even Papi Khomane and Lehlohonolo Seema.”
