Ajax Cape Town midfielder Grant Margeman has urged the club's youngsters to “step up” and fill the void left by senior players like Nathan Paulse and Mark Mayambela.
The South Africa Under-20 international was one of the great finds for the Urban Warriors last season, putting in some mature performances for both club and country.
According to Margeman, the Ajax pre-season campaign has gone well thus far and feels the departure of the likes of Paulse and Maymabela presents a great opportunity for more youngsters to step up and make their names with the first team.
“This will be our first full season with coach [Stanley] Menzo and things are going well,” Margeman tells KickOff.com. “We have been playing a number of friendlies and the players are gelling well together.
"Many of our senior players, like Nathan Paulse and Mark Mayambela, have since left the club and I think now it is time for our youngsters to step up, you know.
"We should take over the baton and start becoming leaders in the team as well. I think a lot will rest on our shoulders as the younger players in the team, and we should now become more mature."
Margeman further states that he is also pleased with his own progress since breaking into the senior setup.
“I’m very happy with my match fitness levels thus far,” says the 19-year-old. “I cannot look too much to the past, [but] I want to build on whatever foundation was laid last season.
“There’s always room for improvement individually and collectively. As long as we all pull together as a team, success will follow.
“We have to be willing to be honest and work hard. The rest will come, we just need to be focused and patient.”
Ajax's first test will be at home to Golden Arrows on Saturday, August 19 before visiting Maritzburg United four days later.
