2017 Varsity Football Round 2 round-up

Posted: 4 August 2017 Time: 12:10

This week’s round of Varsity Football was just as entertaining as expected - featuring a seven-goal thriller, a home win for the "underdogs", a humbling of giants and a heroic shot-stopper.

Defending champions Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) put on a spectacular performance as they put seven goals past home-side University of Fort Hare (UFH), topping University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) 6 – 0 victory against Witwaterstrand University (Wits) last week.

Themba Ndlovu was on the scoresheet again this week, scoring two first-half goals, one of which was a magnificient strike from outside the box while his wonder-goal earned him the Samsung Best Shot award for the night.

Another impressive victory came from North-West University (NWU) when they hosted Wits on Thursday, beating the visitors 4-1.

An early goal from NWU striker Mogomotsi Molefe set the pace for the rest of the match. Another goal from the hosts followed before a Wits penalty ruined their cleansheet in the second half, although it would prove to be a consolation as NWU scored two more, claiming the three points.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) travelled to Pretoria to defeat Tuks on their own turf. Tebogo Mandyu (UJ) scored the only goal of the tight match but it was the performance his goalkeeper, Damaine van der Walt that caught the eye of the crowd.

The keeper was kept busy by a fierce Tuks attack, but did not let any goals slip past him, Earning him the Man of the Match award.

UWC had all the confidence following their massive 6-0 win over Wits last week. but that confidence could not be converted into goals this Thursday as they lost to Central University of Technology (CUT).

The match ended 2-1 with a brace from CUT’s Taole Rakgomo and a chip from UWC’s Josh Silent.
