Stadium Management SA and SAPS confirm inquest docket has been opened after FNB Stadium deaths

Stadium Management SA have confirmed that an official inquest docket has been opened with the South Africa Police Service following the deaths of two fans at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Tragedy struck Soccer City at the weekend as a stampede between turnstiles 14 and 15 ended with two fatalities ahead of the Carling Black Label Champions Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

A third person was hospitalised in critical condition, although they have since been taken off life support and are said to be stable, while there were also numerous other injuries that occurred during the illegal breach of the emergencies gate.

The large number of fans attempting to gain access to the stadium via the emergency gates is believed to be due to illegal ticket sales.

Fake tickets were intercepted by SAPS prior to the game and on matchday, with the counterfeits seemingly printed on official Computicket 'blanks', suggesting "internal corruption" in the company.

Supporters holding said tickets were directed to the security office near entrances 13 and 14 to have them stamped, as the bar codes could not be scanned at the main entrances.

A statement released by SMSA read: “SAPS have confirmed that an inquest docket has already been opened.

“From a Stadium Management South Africa perspective, we are deeply shocked by the tragic events of yesterday [Saturday] and our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of the deceased and those who have been injured.”
