Clinton Larsen enthused by return to fitness of Golden Arrows defender Lehlohonolo Nonyane

Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen is excited to welcome defender Lehlohonolo Nonyane back from injury, just in time for start of the 2017/18 season.

With just over two weeks to go before their first competitive fixture – a visit to Absa Premiership and defending MTN 8 champions Bidvest Wits in their cup quarterfinal at the Bidvest Stadium – Arrows have been boosted by the return of Nonyane.

The experienced 30-year-old left-back featured in just six games last season and sat out the rest of the campaign through a serious groin injury, prompting the club to rope in Nkosinathi Mthiyane on loan from Orlando Pirates.

However, the former Mpumalanga Black Aces full-back is back and ready to go on all cylinders, much to the delight of Larsen.

"I just said to him now, 'Welcome back.' He had 90 minutes, and a very good ninety minutes, I must say," Larsen tells KickOff.com.

"He's very composed, gave us quality going forward and his goal-assist was very good. He also defended very well, and his tactical positioning [is] top notch.

"He's like a new signing for us and we are happy that he has come back. He has got his first 90 minutes under his belt [with us] and I'm sure he'll only get better."

That 90 minutes brought on a 4-1 friendly victory over KZN rivals Maritzburg United, who finished one place above Abafana Bes'thende in the league last season, but Larsen is refusing to get ahead of himself, considering the long season that still lies ahead.

"You don't read too much into it [results] but, of course, it's always nice to score goals and that gives them [players] confidence," he adds.

"But we will not read too much into this, like I said. It is still only a pre-season friendly, but it is always nice to win."
