Malawian striker Esau Kanyenda to focus on coaching after hanging up his boots

KickOff.com can confirm that Malawian striker Esau Kanyenda has retired following the expiry of his contract at Polokwane City.

Kanyenda will now be pursuing a career in coaching with the assistance of the Football Association of Malawi.

“I am hanging up my boots now,” Kanyenda tells KickOff.com.

His contract at City was up at the end of last month and after careful considerations he has now called it quits.

“Next up for me is coaching because it is something that has always been on my mind. I am actually going back home to pursue coaching with the help of FAM who have indicated that they will assist by sending me to coaching courses," he explains.

"I think I have done my role playing and it is now time to move on. There were some offers from NFD teams here but after careful considerations I thought it is best that I go back home to start with my coaching courses.”

The veteran striker played only for Polokwane since his return from a lengthy spell in Russia at the start of the 2012-13 season going on to end as Rise and Shine’s top scorer as they won promotion to the PSL.

He has gone on to stay with the club for all of their four years in the PSL.

“Kanyenda is a true gentleman who has served the club very well through all of his time with us and is actually someone that we would have liked to keep if there were other opportunities within the club. We wish him well in all that he plans to do next,” says Tincy Tema, an official at Polokwane.

The ‘Black Mamba’ as Kanyenda is nicknamed remains one of the best imports from Malawi to play in the PSL.

He was a hit with Jomo Cosmos during his first spell in the PSL scoring 18 goals in 28 starts in his first season and had scored 15 in just 16 games when he left for Russia during the 2002/2003.
