Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune says the team take every game seriously

Posted: 25 July 2017 Time: 15:07

Itumeleng Khune insists they take pride in winning every game at Kaizer Chiefs regardless of its significance as they get ready for yet another ‘bubble-gum’ pre-season match.

Chiefs have been off to a quick start in pre-season winning the Maize Cup and will this weekend contest the Carling Black Label trophy against rivals Orlando Pirates.

According to Khune all games matter.

“Kaizer Chiefs is a winning team and every game we play we want to win,” argues Khune.

“So for us having won the Maize Cup people were saying it is just a Mickey Mouse Cup but for us it is helping us see how far we are and how prepared we are ahead of the new season. So every game we play is not a friendly for Kaizer Chiefs.

"To us as players it is preparations and every game means a lot to us. Even if we play against each other at training we all take ourselves seriously and we are all pushing to be the best that we can be."

Yet the reality is that winning trophies such as the Maize Cup don't distract from the fact that nothing tangible has been delivered to Naturena – trophywise – in the last two seasons.

Khune knows it well having been with AmaKhosi for all of his professional career.

“It has been a bitter pill to swallow because it has never happened and for us as players we are the ones who put ourselves in this situation and it is very important that we take ourselves out of it by performing week in week out. It is very important for the players to step up and start winning matches," says Khune.

“It is our role as players who have been here for long to guide them [new players] and tell them about the culture of the team. That this is a team that wins trophies every season but the past two seasons haven’t gone well for us. But we are looking forward to this season and we also want to reclaim our glory."
