KickOff.com editor Tshepang Mailwane believes now is the time for Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Lebese to step up and rise to his potential.
There’s something I don’t quite understand about George Lebese.
He’s one of the most talented players in the PSL, but he has somehow not reached his full potential and he is in his ninth year with Kaizer Chiefs.
Like Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates’ Mpho Makola, Lebese can sometimes be casual on the pitch and that has played a part in them making it even further than they already are in their careers.
By now, Lebese should be a star and a player considered for big individual awards such as the footballer of the season.
There is no denying he has the skill, the eye for goal and the ability to take on the responsbility of being a match-winner for Amakhosi. But it’s time he reached his full potential, and the coming season provides an opportunity for him to finally make the mark he should be making in domestic football.
Granted, there have been some injuries over the last two seasons that have hampered his progress, which has led to him losing his place in the starting line-up. Lebese should fight for his place in the team because he won’t just walk into the starting line-up.
He has made a good start during pre-season, scoring in the Maize Cup final against Free State Stars recently, as well as in a friendly against Township Rollers at the weekend in Botswana. These are promising signs ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, but he has to consistently perform to earn his place in the starting line-up.
Chiefs coach Steve Komphela often used Edmore Chirambadare on the left-wing last season but Lebese is more creative than the Zimbabwean, and gets more goals, which is what any coach wants from their wingers.
There have been talks of a possible departure for Lebese because he wants more game-time. However, with such a promising pre-season, Lebese could feel that this is the season he finally fulfils his potential.
