Platinum Stars assistant coach Milton Dlamini said finances dictated Ndumiso Mabena's departure from the club but he is hopeful the ex-Orlando Pirates striker may lower his price.
Mabena left Dikwena at the end of June after his contract was not renewed, having played a key role for the team in the past three seasons following his arrival from Pirates.
The 30-year-old has since been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.
“We are losing key players at an alarming rate. Mabena is a good player, we rate him very highly. But we can’t afford him as things stand,” Dlamini is quoted as saying by MTN Football.
“If he wants he can still come back with a reasonable offer, the team still wants him. Hopefully we can agree on the personal terms with him,” he added after his side's 1-0 loss to Free State Stars at the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup in Orkney on Saturday.
Chiefs won the one-day pre-season spectacle with a 1-0 defeat of Ea Lla Koto in the final at James Motlatsi Stadium.
