Mlambo: I’ll come back stronger

Following a tough first season at Bidvest Wits, midfielder Xola Mlambo has vowed to return even stronger after his injury woes hampered what looked like a promising start to the campaign.
Mlambo, a player who enjoys having the ball at his feet, finished the 2016/17 PSL campaign with just nine Absa Premiership appearances, six of which were starts.
Now that he is back training with the champions ahead of the new season after putting his ankle and hamstring injuries behind him, there’s a lot of competition Mlambo will face in central midfield from the likes of Granwald Scott, Thabang Monare, Ben Motshwari as well as new signings Daylon Claasen and Steven Pienaar.
With so much still to happen in the transfer window, Mlambo, who has attracted the interest of Orlando Pirates, could be on the move.
“It was a challenging season for me. I started getting injured in my first game against Kaizer Chiefs. I injured my quadricep. I managed to play with it, but as I was progressing, I got a serious ankle injury. I had to stay strong and fight that. I dealt with it,” Mlambo tells KickOff.com.
“I came back and tried winning back my position, but then I got a grade one hamstring injury. When I overcame that, after we came back from Egypt [CAF Champions League], I got another hamstring injury, a grade two injury which I had to deal with."
He adds: “It was not an easy season, but I am blessed with two trophies [MTN8 and Absa Premiership]. That season is behind me and I am looking forward to the next season and I'll see what it has for me. The season ahead is going to be a complex one, looking at the competition Wits have. I am promising to give my all and to keep working hard.”
The 26-year-old says he is grateful for the support he got while on the sidelines nursing his injuries.
“What helped me to become stronger was the support I got from family, friends and the coaches I have worked with,” he said. “That kept me going and it made me stronger. I did not lose hope and I know I will come back stronger.”
