Gavin Hunt intensifies pre-season for Bidvest Wits' PSL and MTN8 title defences

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says he changed his approach for the champions' pre-season camp in Stellenbosch this time round on his annual visit to the Mother City.

According to Hunt he deliberately did not bring along his whole squad - which has been boosted by the high-profile signings of Steven Pienaar and Daylon Claasen among others - for their preparations ahead of the 2017/18 Absa Premiership season.

“I didn’t want to bring everybody otherwise it becomes just… you know. I wanted to try and intensify things a little more. It’s the first time I’ve done it a little bit differently this year," said the four-time PSL champion.

“I normally bring a few with here and there, five or six extras, younger ones but I didn’t wanted to do that because I think the squad is big enough not to carry those ones, you know what I’m saying.

“So, basically I didn’t do that this year. I’ll use them certainly as the season goes on as we’ve got CAF and we’ve got a lot of competitions still to come.”

The former SuperSport United mentor went on to explain the nature of the trip and its value in fostering team spirit.

“What we do is bond, a lot of team bonding and a lot of team work, looking at different shapes, different patterns, different styles, different combinations… It’s a load but it’s not a load really because we’re playing 30-40 minutes a day, you know.

“I like to come to Cape Town because you get good competitive games, you know. The weather’s obviously not the best but the competitiveness of the games is the most important thing for me and there’s a lot of teams here, you know. And I enjoy it, yeah it’s good.”

The Clever Boys left the Cape on Monday as they continue to prepare to defend their league and MTN8 crowns this coming season.
