Stuart Baxter to continue fielding 'development' Bafana Bafana squads in CHAN qualifiers

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter admits he is using the ongoing 2018 African Nations Championships as a “development tournament” as he looks to strengthen the future of the national team.
South Africa kicked off their CHAN qualifying campaign with a confident 2-0 first-leg win over Botswana on Saturday, a result which brought plenty of pride and joy to the former SuperSport United coach.
Baxter has employed plenty of youth in his squads since taking over the Bafana reins in June and continued to do so at the Francistown Stadium this weekend, and the Brit insists he will continue using the occasion to afford his youngsters an opportunity at international football.
“We have a lot of respect for the CHAN tournament, just like we had for the COSAFA Cup, but South Africa - and that is no disrespect to anyone - is using this event more as a development tournament,” said Baxter.
“If we would have lost [on Saturday], the main point of the event for us would have been to try to give international experience to players like Teboho Mokoena, introduce Cole Alexander, Jamie Webber and in that way hopefully it will serve South African football.
“Also, every time they put on the national team jersey I want them to win. Even in Rustenburg [for the second leg] we will change the team, we may change the formation, but we won’t change the attitude that every time you put on the jersey you should try to win. In that way, they will hopefully get developed.”
