John Tlale backs Wayne Sandilands to impress at Orlando Pirates following Mamelodi Sundowns exit

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper John Tlale believes Wayne Sandilands is good enough to be the Buccaneers’ first-choice shot-stopper and end their woes in between the sticks.

Pirates had a major crisis in the goalkeeping department last season as Brighton Mhlongo, Jackson Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane all made costly errors which contributed to the club’s humiliating campaign.

None of the goalkeepers at Pirates showed any seriousness in trying to hold on to the number-one jersey, so Sandilands will no doubt be eyeing that spot in the starting line-up after spending a lot of time on the bench at Sundowns, where he competed with Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene.

“I think he is good enough to be the first-choice goalkeeper. I am not undermining anyone [at Pirates], but I think he has what it takes to be first-choice,” Tlale tells

“Whenever he was called upon at Sundowns, he did a good job and that shows he is a good goalkeeper. Having him in the team will bring competition in the goalkeeping department. If he gets the right support from his teammates, then I think he will do well. He will add value because he wants to prove a point and show that Sundowns should have played him more,” he adds.

Tlale, though, has warned that Pirates’ problems are far from over. He feels they should do more in the market to bolster the squad.

“I think Pirates need to sign more experienced defenders because they concede a lot of goals,” he says.
