Kaizer Chiefs right-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele says Bidvest Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo deserved to win the Absa Premiership Defender of the Season award.
'Tyson' beat Wits teammate Sifiso Hlanti and Mphahlele to the accolade at the PSL's annual prize-giving in Sandton on Monday night.
“I am not disappointed at all,” Mphahlele is quoted as saying on his club's website.
“Tyson deserved to win the award. Ironically, I was his captain when we played for South Africa’s Under-20s side and he now captains me at Bafana Bafana. We have become good friends of the years.”
The 27-year-old revealed the awards gala has fuelled the fire to help Chiefs avoid a hat-trick of seasons without silverware.
“It was interesting to observe that the players who won the awards were mostly from the season’s winning teams,” Mphahlele said.
“The evening has really give me a renewed motivation going into the new season. I am going to give more and go further than ever before in my quest to win trophies for Kaizer Chiefs.”
'Rama' scored twice and provided four assists in 29 league and three cup games in 2016/17, winning Chiefs' players' player of the year gong in his first season at Naturena following his arrival from Mamelodi Sundowns.
