Following Cape Town City’s signing of Teko Modise, KickOff.com looks at five reasons the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is a good buy for the ambitious club.
The Citizens announced early Wednesday morning that they had completed a two-year deal with the midfielder, who joined as a free agent after departing Mamelodi Sundowns.
And below, KickOff.com looks at what makes the playmaker a shrewd purchase for the Mother City club.
He’s not in Cape Town for a holiday
The enterprising midfielder has swapped the busy life of Johannesburg for a much more relaxed environment in the Mother City. That, however, does not mean he will be relaxed. Modise wants to finish his career on a high and you can expect to see him playing his heart out to add to his trophy-laden career.
Experience is key
He’ll bring valuable experience to the club, especially when they participate in the CAF Confederation Cup next year. Modise will know what to expect when they play on the continent. He did, after all, lift the CAF Champions League and Super Cup titles with Mamelodi Sundowns.
He will bring creativity in midfield
City supporters enjoyed watching Aubrey Ngoma and Lebogang Manyama terrorising defenders in attack, but Modise will bring something they did not really have in central midfield last year. He’ll bring great vision, that killer pass and he’ll slow down the game when it’s necessary. City have hard workers in midfield who win the ball and play it to attacking players, but you can be sure Modise will be starting most of the attacks when he collects the ball in midfield.
He’s got a lot to offer
He may be 34, but Modise still has a lot of football in him. On quite a few occasions when he came on as a substitute for his former club Sundowns, he was able to change the game. He gives coach Benni McCarthy the option of using him in the starting line-up or, at times, as an impact player in the second half.
He is good for the City brand
The same way LA Galaxy used David Beckham to make a statement, City have done the same thing with Modise. Signing a big name like Modise will probably attract even bigger players in the future. It’s good for the City brand if they can attract big-name players regularly.
