Captain Vuyo Mere convinced Platinum Stars can turn fortunes around in 2017/18 PSL season

Platinum Stars captain Vuyo Mere believes the club are on the right track in their rebuilding process following the recent departures of senior players.

Dikwena have seen a lot of changes in recent weeks, including coach Cavin Johnson’s exit, along with his assistant Willem Jackson, while a number of key players such as Kobamelo Kodisang and Isaac Nhlapo have also left.

But Mere feels the squad that remains, including new arrival Sibusiso Mthethwa and returning striker Thobani Kunene, are capable of taking the Rustenberg club forward in the upcoming season.

"It's the nature of the game: coaches come and go, new players come and the old ones leave," Mere said.

"We have to take this club forward, the players who are remaining, and those who have arrived, try to make them understand what the objective of this team is. It’s not about individuals, it's about the team.

"If one family member leaves, it's always going to be sad but with the squad we have now, we are looking forward to the new season."

Mere is convinced Stars will have a good season, despite their disappointing run in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, where they failed to register a single victory.

The skipper, though, was pleased to see the fighting spirit from his side after they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in their final group match against Mbabane Swallows at Moruleng Stadium last night.

"Truly speaking, we must be disappointed with the results but with the performance I have to give it to the younger ones,” Mere said.

"If you look at the team that we played against Swallows the future of this club is bright if we can keep these boys together.”
