Gavin Hunt delighted with Steven Pienaar capture

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt is delighted with the club's acquisition of former Everton and Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar.

The current Absa Premiership champions today confirmed the signing of the 35-year-old attacking midfielder, following his return home from a 16-year spell abroad.

Pienaar last played in the PSL with Ajax Cape Town, before moving to their sister-club Ajax Amsterdam back in 2001. Since then, he has gone on to play for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and Premier League outfits Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently Sunderland.

Hunt has lauded the arrival of the Westbury-born central midfielder, who he believes brings multiple facets to his championship-winning side.

"Pienaar is a fantastic signing for the club. We're obviously happy and I'm sure he'll add value. He certainly brings in quality and experience as well," Hunt tells KickOff.com.

With Wits already boasting several options in midfield, Hunt jokes that he will be adjusting his formation to accommodate the new signings – Pienaar and Daylon Claasen.

"We're going to play 4-7 [formation] now," he jokes. "No... we've got a lot of good defensive midfield players and we need attacking midfield players.

"Pienaar can give that to us, but it's important that he's someone who can change roles and give us different options. We'll find a way [to fit him in], there's no two ways about it."

Following their first round exit from the CAF Champions League this year, the Clever Boys are showing clear intent on building up a squad capable of going the distance both domestically and on the continent.

"Exactly. It gives us a bit more depth, which we've never really had. Even last season we were a bit short with a few players here and there," Hunt comments.

"But a guy like Steven and the ones we've brought in now will add huge value."
