Dean Furman eyes SuperSport United progression to the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals

Posted: 1 July 2017 Time: 12:25

SuperSport United captain Dean Furman says the club has only one desire, which is to reach the quarter-finals of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

Matsatsantsa face a tough task in their penultimate Group D fixture against leaders Horoya at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry, Guinea this evening (17h00 SA time).

The Tshwane side are currently second on the standings, with six points from four games, and trail Horoya by just two points, while defending champions TP Mazembe are hot on their heels in third, with the same number of points.

A win this evening will send SuperSport top of the table, with Mazembe and bottom side CF Mounana squaring off in Libreville on Sunday evening (17h00 SA time).

Furman, who last weekend lead his team to a historic second successive Nedbank Cup title, is adamant on making further club history by guiding his charges to the knockout stage of the continental competition for the first time.

"We have shown how good we are [domestically] in cup competitions and we've got to get out of the group," Furman tells

"We know that we can compete against the giants of Africa, and playing in Africa has given us a lot of confidence to know that we can compete against the best on the continent.

"We've got two big games coming up [against Horoya and CF Mounana] and our season isn't done yet. We want to make sure that we are in the quarter-finals of this competition. We will give our best to make sure we are in the next round."

Following the official departure of coach Stuart Baxter to Bafana Bafana, Kaitano Tembo is expected to take the reins this evening despite the appointment of Eric Tinkler as the club's new coach.

The team will return to face Mounana at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in their final group encounter next weekend.
