Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Johnson is delighted to put an injury-hit season behind him following his national team call-up as he hopes to win over Stuart Baxter.
The 20-year-old Ajax Cape Town shot-stopper was called up alongside Bruce Bvuma (Kaizer Chiefs) and Baolefa Pule (SuperSport United) for Bafana’s Cosafa Cup campaign, where he hopes he will get a chance to shine following a difficult season.
“Look, I had a difficult season behind me with a thumb injury,” Johnson told KickOff.com. “Things didn’t go all my way, but I dug deep and kept on pushing.
“Then I received my first call-up and this just re-affirmed that my sacrifices was well worth the pain and effort. Therefore I have that same mentality not to rest on my laurels now that I’ve been selected in the squad.
“I’m pushing and working hard for the number one jersey as I’m one of three keepers that was selected out of a lot of other keepers in the league.”
Johnson will also be upbeat about the fact that Baxter intends to give a number of debuts to young players in this tournament which is currently played in Rustenburg.
“Coach Baxter also deserves a lot of credit for showing us youngsters that he believes in us,” he said.”It’s good to know that someone is watching so we have to perform consistently. Therefore we should repay the coach whoever gets the opportunity as it might not come again.”
