Ferreira hints at more Wits signings

Bidvest Wits CEO Jose Ferreira has hinted at more signings during the upcoming transfer window but quickly ruled out interest in Teko Modise or Steven Pienaar.
The reigning Absa Premiership and MTN8 champions have recently confirmed the signing of 27-year-old South African midfielder Daylon Claasen, and have also been linked with numerous other players in recent weeks.
Ferreira, though, was reluctant to give anything away apart from sharing a quirky old proverb hinting that anything could happen as far as incoming players are concerned ahead of the new season.
"We haven't signed with anyone other than who we've announced. There's a couple of player who we are interested in, but I'm not going to speak about players that we haven't signed," commented Ferreira.
"Whatever happens between now and August 31... There's an old Portuguese saying in football, and it's really a solid one: 'What is the truth today is a lie tomorrow, and what is a lie today is the truth tomorrow.'
"That's the dynamics of football. You ask me a question today: 'Are you signing such a player?' I didn't even think about the player, or haven't been approached about the player, but tomorrow I sign the player and you say, 'but you lied to us. I didn't lie to you – that's the dynamics. The market is such that until August 31, things will happen."
Two veteran former Bafana Bafana stars in Modise and Pienaar are currently available in the market, with the former having walked away from Mamelodi Sundowns and the latter from EPL side Sunderland as free agents.
However, Ferreira ruled out the possibility of signing either as he expressed his content with the team's midfield department.
"I'm not speaking to Steven Pienaar. I can tell you categorically that I've not spoken to Pienaar at all," he added.
"We get telephone calls from agents all the time, and the problem is that you get a call from someone who says, 'I represent Teko Modise' – as an example, I'm not saying this is what happened with Teko Modise – 'would you be interested?'
"They don't even listen to the answer, because immediately it finds its way to the newspapers that we are now interested in Teko Modise – why? Because I received a call from the agent asking me if I was interested in the player, and the agents like to play that game.
"Was I approached about Teko Modise? Yes. Have I been approached about Steven Pienaar? Yes. I have been approached by agents for about 200/300 different players, and I can assure you if we sign one or two of them it will be way too many.
"I know that we are in the free-agent business but that doesn't mean that we sign every free agent available. We try and select the very best that we can find. Take Teko Modise, who is a fantastic player, but do we need a Teko Modise?
"I think our midfield is probably one of the best in the country. Would it make sense for Bidvest Wits to sign Teko Modise? The answer is clearly not."
