Mobara wants Nedbank Cup vengeance

Abbubaker Mobara says he is keen to erase the pain of his last Nedbank Cup final by making sure that Orlando Pirates emerge winners this evening.
Mobara had to endure the pain of being a losing finalist two years ago, after he missed his penalty kick that saw Ajax Cape Town surrender the Nedbank Cup crown to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2015.
It was a penalty shoot-out loss that still haunts the 23-year-old up to now, despite the fact that he has since moved from the Urban Warriors to the Buccaneers.
“My mother cried because I was the reason we never won it,” he recalls of that Saturday afternoon in Port Elizabeth, after his penalty shaved the top of the crossbar and went into the stands.
Franklin Cale also then went on to miss before Bongani Zungu converted the deciding spot-kick for The Brazilians.
“That was a harsh penalty that I kicked. That also makes me a better player today because of that penalty I missed, but then the world’s best footballers also miss – I have seen [Lionel] Messi miss a few times and I have also seen Cristiano [Ronaldo] miss, so it doesn’t make me any different,” he notes.
Asked whether he would be brave enough to take one again if it goes down to another shootout, Mobara added: “I will just kick it. I will just blast it in without so much thought about placing it in,” he chuckles before giving a serious look.
“All of us at the club know that we haven’t had a good season and we all know that it is something that we have to accept and move on. The team that is hungry enough will take it and, since coming back [from Bafana Bafana], I have seen a [Pirates] team that I usually played against, which is a team that wants to win. If we can carry on like that [today] we stand a good chance of winning the game.
“They [SuperSport] expect us to come with a bang and that is what we are going to do. This cup is important for us, considering the kind of season we had, so we will be going out there with the intention of winning it.
"Every single player in the team believes that. We want to win this one, and I want to win this one too because I couldn’t do it the last time out,” he concludes.
