Reyaad Pieterse prefers SuperSport United success over personal gain

Posted: 23 June 2017 Time: 08:37

SuperSport United goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse says success in the Nedbank Cup against Orlando Pirates is the only thing that matters to him as history beckons for the club.

The former Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper featured in his side’s cup quarter-final win over Kaizer Chiefs, yet rival Ronwen Williams donned the gloves in the club’s semi-final victory over Chippa United.

Williams have been in fine form of late, keeping his rival on the bench for the latter part of the season while also earning himself a call-up in the Bafana Bafana  squad in the process, while Pieterse has been intrusted with the gloves for his side’s continental campaign.

Yet Pieterse says he’s not worried as to who gets the nod ahead of Saturday’s final against the Buccaneers at Moses Mabhida Stadium, insisting the club’s ambitions takes preference over personal gain.

“There’s a bit of history to be made here for all of us,” Pieterse told our website.

“We’ll be the outright leaders of this competition with the most wins. This is definitely something to look forward not, not really who gets picked for the number one jersey.

“Ronwen has been doing well and deserves his place if he gets picked. We have a healthy and competitive rivalry, and not just in the goalkeeping department.”

The former Wits academy product was quick to point out that the Sea Robbers will harbour the same aspirations as they, too, have won the cup on three occasions in the past.

“I guess it won’t be as easy as it sounds as Pirates want to finish on a high as well,” he said. “We’re both in similar positions which should make for a good spectacle.”

Kick-off in Durban is set for 20:15.
