Thato Mokeke confirms SuperSport United return but thankful to Cape Town City

SuperSport United defender Thato Mokeke has thanked Cape Town City following an enjoyable loan spell, as he reunites with coach Eric Tinkler at his parent club.

Tinkler was confirmed as Stuart Baxter's replacement at SuperSport ahead of next season, after the former Bafana Bafana midfielder surprised many by leaving his previous job at the Citizens.

Upon welcoming Tinkler to Matsatsantsa, club CEO Stan Matthews confirmed that the club had also recalled Mokeke from City, joking that he becomes the coach's first signing for the new season.

"I think he's fortunate in that Thato Mokeke was only at Cape Town City on loan, so we've already recalled Thato," confirmed Matthews. "That's already one signing under Eric's belt before he even says go."

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old, who featured 32 times under Tinkler at City this season, has thanked the Cape Town-based club for the opportunity to regain his playing confidence.

"I enjoyed every moment of my stay at Cape Town City," Mokeke tells KickOff.com.

"I will always be grateful to the management, my former teammates and the supporters for the support they gave me during my stay in the club."

On reuniting with Tinkler, Mokeke says he cannot take it for granted that his place is guaranteed next season but hopes the move works out for both of them.

"It's a different club so I can't expect the same treatment. There'll be more pressure on myself as there is more competition, and also on the coach as the club expects him to do well," he adds.

"It's great that we worked together last season and we will be working together again but, like I say, my performances at Cape Town City won't count for much now as it's a different team."
