Despite acknowledging Bafana Bafana were well worth their historic victory over Nigeria, Percy Tau feels the side must not get too far ahead of themselves.
South Africa got their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win over the Super Eagles, with Tau netting a 79th-minute counter-attacking goal with virtually his first touch to secure a memorable first-ever win over the Nigerians in a competitive fixture.
And with all the plaudits flooding in, the Mamelodi Sundowns winger feels his side deserve the praise, but should not get too carried away.
"We don't want to be too confident just because we beat Nigeria,” he is quoted as saying by TMG Sport. “But I do think we should also give ourselves some credit. We worked hard for this win and we're glad that we won against Nigeria.
"We could have scored more goals. Overall we did so well.
"We're South Africans. It's about time we get the same respect.”
Tau revealed that the squad did not focus too much on the opposition in the build-up to the showdown, insisting they did not fear their continental rivals.
"We came here with the focus on ourselves,” he said. “It was more on what can we do. And I think we did that so well.
"We didn't fear them. Maybe people at home were saying‚ 'We've always lost to them'. But‚ I mean‚ we were just confident."
Bafana land back in the country at 5am on Monday morning before heading to Rustenburg ahead of an international friendly against Zambia at Moruleng Stadium on Tuesday.
