Dominic Issacs lauds Kaizer Chiefs trio Khune, Mphahlele, Mathoho after Bafana win

Former Amakhosi defender Dominic Isaacs was full of praise for the club’s representing trio during Saturday’s 2-0 African Nations Cup qualifying win over Nigeria.

Stuart Baxter got his tenure as South Africa coach off to the perfect start as Bafana clinched their first-ever competitive win over the Super Eagles this weekend.

REPORT: Bafana Bafana outclass Nigeria

Amakhosi trio Itumeleng Khune, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Erick Mathoho were all part of the starting XI that saw off Nigeria, while Lorenzo Gordinho was amongst the substitutes, and Issacs feels the players did well to represent the Glamour Boys, and their country, on the international stage.

“Khune showed his experience in goal, doing a fine job whenever he was required to come into action,” former Amakhosi defender Isaacs said on Chiefs' official website. “He commanded his area very well.”

“Rama was excellent, very solid defensively, while making threatening runs forward as well. Mphahlele’s cross for Tokelo Rantie’s opening goal was class.

“Tower, meanwhile, formed a formidable combination at the heart of defence with Thulani Hlatshwayo. Mathoho played very well.”

Looking at Bafana’s overall performance in Uyo, Isaacs added: “To be honest, I felt confident before the match that we could win. Stuart Baxter has now been coaching in South Africa for quite a while and knows all the players inside out.

“Of course, Nigeria had a relatively young and inexperienced squad, but Bafana’s overall performance was good, they were tactically very sound and deserved the win.”
